| Samsung ships brand new 1 TB driveSamsung has begun shipping its F1 series 1TB hard drive promising the world’s highest recording density using only three disks. The Serial ATA 3.5in F1 Series run at 7,200rpm and provide a higher data storage density per platter by using three disks, resulting in faster data processing. Samsung also claims that optimised electronics and power saving modes reduce power consumption and resulting heat dissipation to make the F1 the coolest operating 1TB drive on the market. “Based on published specs for Samsung’s F1 Series and similar products from other suppliers, Samsung’s has the best performance and lowest power consumption of any product in its category,” said Mark Geenen, president at analyst firm TrendFocus. Perpendicular magnetic recording with Samsung’s flying-on-demand head technology improves recording stability over changing temperature ranges, according to the company. The F1 Series drive features 334GB per-platter capacity, 7,200RPM spindle speed, 32MB cache and a claimed ‘mean time between failures’ of up to 1.2 million hours. It is now shipping with a price tag of $399. Good time to upgrade your old 120 gig drives! PS: DON'T WANA DOUBLE POST SO POST COMMENTS SO I CAN POST NW TECH NEWS.......PLZ | |

| New USB 3.0 boosting the speed 10 timesThe “SuperSpeed” USB Promotions Group was announced Tuesday at the Intel Developer Forum. The promotions group will get together with contributors over the next year to finalize a USB 3.0 spec that will, they hope, take care of our wired peripheral and syncing needs for another five years or more. USB 3.0 is built upon, and is backwards-compatible with, the USB 2.0 “High Speed” spec. It would be generous to even call the specifications “early” at this stage, but the group still had lots of information about how USB 3.0 will work and what features it will provide. The spec should be finalized sometime in the middle of 2008, with initial devices available in ‘09, and broad deployment by 2010.
The main two goals of SuperSpeed USB are to provide a 10X boost in transfer rate (from 480-Mbits/s in USB 2.0 to 4.8 Gbits/s in USB 3.0), while dramatically lowering power consumption. One example of their speed goals is to transfer a 27GB HD movie to a portable device in 70 seconds. The same thing would take 15 minutes or more with HighSpeed USB (2.0). The SuperSpeed devices will use the same connectors and the same programming and device models as existing devices. Consider that it takes maybe one or two tenths of a second to transfer a typical 4 Mbyte song to a portable music player with today’s USB 2.0. That’s “fast enough” for some users, but just try to fill up that 80-Gbyte iPod and you might as well walk away and cook dinner while you wait: 3,000 songs would take perhaps 400 to 600 seconds – up to 10 minutes. Anyway, that’s still a good time considering today’s speed, isn’t it.

| 20% of world computers infected with rootkitsMalware researcher & head off department at ahmeer's Corp have highlighted what they are calling a ‘massive growth’ in the number of PCs harboring rootkit infections. More than 725,000 PCs were scanned using the Prevx CSI malware scanner over a two-month period. Of the around 291,000 users who scanned their PCs during October 2007, some form of spyware or malware was found on one in six. Significantly, although rootkits were detected on 15.6% of PCs during October 2007, that figure had risen to 22% by early December. Rootkits are often ‘dropped’ or buried by other infections. They then modify a PC’s operating system to hide themselves from both the user and any security products installed on the computer. By so doing rootkits can allow criminals to remotely monitor, record, modify, steal and transfer data from the victim’s PC.
Some rootkits are undetectable by conventional antivirus and antispyware applications. A tech-savvy user may believe his or her computer is ‘clean’, and unwittingly pass on increasingly valuable personal and financial data. Since 1 December 2007, 114,891 new users have run Prevx CSI with rootkit-detection features enabled. Of those PCs, 1,678 had what Prevx describes as ’significant rootkit infections’. That equates to 1.46% or approximately one in 70 systems, which is almost 15 times higher than the one in 1,000 rootkit-infected PCs previously estimated by industry experts. These botnets counting hundreds of thousands PCs have to work with something, right? | |
